Description
1. Product Name
ER14.5 high-frequency ferrite core transformer for surface-mount power supplies. NiZn power ferrite core, copper coil wound on pins 1-3 and 4-6, epoxy encapsulated capsule housing, tin-plated lead-free gull-wing pins, horizontal mounting, maximum body dimensions 15.0 x 12.0 x 7.0 mm.

Core. ER14.5 is the core size, and the material is nickel-zinc ferrite. NiZn material is selected for switching operation because its resistivity is high enough to keep eddy currents induced inside the core very small; what remains is hysteresis loss, which is a property of the material characteristics and flux swing, independent of the winding. The two core halves are positioned on either side of the coil former, and the housing fully encloses both.
This is critical at a 15.0 mm lateral dimension because the core must carry flux at the switching frequency rather than the line frequency. When driving the same power at higher frequencies, the flux swing per cycle decreases proportionally, so the core cross-sectional area also decreases—this is why such a small core can do the work of a laminated iron core many times its size.
2. Construction and Materials

Housing. The molded housing encapsulates the assembled core and coil. It secures the core halves and coil former against vibration, prevents moisture and flux residue from contacting the windings, and gives the part defined external dimensions so that the placement nozzle has a flat landing surface. The pins pass through the housing wall and are formed into solder feet on the outside.
The pins are tin-plated and lead-free. This is both a process and a material decision: the tin layer wets well under lead-free reflow profiles without a separate pre-tinning step, and the formed solder feet create a three-sided fillet rather than a butt joint.

The same body is wound in different configurations to suit different design requirements. The differences lie in the number of turns, wire diameter, turns ratio between the two windings, and the pin row position; what remains the same is the core, the housing, and the way the part is mounted on the circuit board. This is why the electrical parameter table in Section 5.3 is given as ranges rather than single values.
3. Features
NiZn power ferrite core. The ER14.5 core uses nickel-zinc ferrite material, which is preferred for high-frequency switching applications because its high resistivity keeps eddy current losses low as switching frequency increases.
Horizontal surface-mount body. The body lies flat on the circuit board with pins formed into solder feet, so the part can be placed by the same pick-and-place machine that mounts the rest of the board, without a through-hole process step.
Epoxy encapsulated capsule housing. The molded housing covers the core and windings, secures the coil position, prevents moisture from reaching the windings, and provides defined external dimensions for the placement nozzle.
Tin-plated lead-free pins. The pins are tin-plated and lead-free, so the part can go directly through lead-free reflow soldering without additional surface finish requirements.
Wound to customer design. Turns, wire diameter, turns ratio, and inductance are set per order; the ranges in Section 5 are factory production windows, not fixed catalog winding specifications.
4. Applications
AC-DC power supplies and adapters. The primary side connects to the rectified mains bus, the secondary side powers the output stage, and the windings are set according to the controller's switching frequency.
Home appliances. Electric kettles, rice cookers, toasters, and coffee machines now all carry small switch-mode power supply boards for control panel power, which is exactly where this body is applied.
Smart thermostats and control panels. Wall-mounted panels are powered by low-voltage supplies and must be electrically isolated from the loads they control, which is precisely the job of the secondary winding.
Electric vehicle charging and auxiliary power. Auxiliary power rails on both the vehicle side and the charging pile side require small isolated power supplies for control and measurement circuits, which is where the encapsulated body is applied.
Industrial control and isolated interfaces. When two circuit boards are at different ground potentials, the transformer transfers signals or auxiliary power across the ground potential boundary without using a conductive connection between the two grounds.

The two board views are the same part observed from both sides. The pins lie flat against the pads, and the body is suspended above the circuit board, so the encapsulation compound does not contaminate the solder mask, and there is an air gap around the windings. Once the pad pattern is drawn, the position cannot be adjusted, so the terminal row spacing in Section 5.4 is the basis for the layout design.
5. Application Specifications
The following data distinguishes three concepts that are often conflated: the rated range of the series, the specified parameters for this core's winding, and the physical dimensions the part follows. These ranges are factory windows for custom windings, not fixed catalog part parameters.

6. Ordering and Customization
This product is not ordered through a fixed-winding catalog code, but rather by core size and design specification: provide the topology, switching frequency, input/output parameters, board space, and the safety class the design must meet, and the winding is designed accordingly. Dimensions and performance are developed according to the customer's design, as stated in the product documentation.
- Core size ER14.5, nickel-zinc power ferrite, encapsulated housing, horizontal SMD mounting.
- Specify the topology and switching frequency: the winding design must address both parameters.
- Specify the primary winding window and secondary output parameters in volts and amps, not just power.
- Specify the package size where the pin rows must land, because the position is fixed once the board is drawn.
- Specify safety requirements so creepage distance and insulation schemes are addressed at the design stage, not argued over afterward.
